The reception of MSI via the Inmarsat EGC system depends on some settings which can be made in the Inmarsat C terminal. These settings have to be made on the Inmarsat software, which can be shown on the terminal screen.
The operation of the Inmarsat C terminal was explained in the chapter on Inmarsat. The following factors should be programmed/changed on the Inmarsat software and may have an influence on the message reception:
Not all the satellites are used for the transmission of MSI for one single NAVAREA. So it is important to "log on" the relevant satellite for this reception. The information can be found in the ALRS Vol.5 (see appendix, Map of coverage Inmarsat satellites and NAVAREAs and Transmission schedule for EGC messages).
Just like NAVTEX there is a possibility on the Inmarsat terminal to make a selection of message types you might want to receive, see the picture below. Message types that are not selected will not be shown after reception. However, some message types cannot be "de-selected", i.e. navigational warnings, meteo warnings and SAR messages.

In some coastal areas there will be no NAVTEX system available (Australia). In these areas it could be possible to use the EGC system for the transmission of MSI. To make the size of the areas not too large, it is possible to establish coastal areas within a NAVAREA. These coastal Areas could be selected on the terminal if relevant for the reception of the EGC MSI. Only messages of the selected coastal areas will be shown after being received.
Since the terminal calculates if the information received is relevant in relation to the present position information, it could happen that you will not see relevant information because you are not in the NAVAREA (even if you are very close to its border). In which case it's possible to select an additional NAVAREA. You should keep in mind that the information should be transmitted via the satellite your logged on to to receive this MSI, otherwise you should log on to this satellite for a short period of time (this depends on the scheduled transmission time). Don't forget to log on the relevant satellite after the reception of the MSI.
The operation of the Inmarsat C terminal was explained in the chapter on Inmarsat. The following factors should be programmed/changed on the Inmarsat software and may have an influence on the message reception:
- Position and time of position update,
- Satellite on which we want to "log on",
- Programming of the terminal in relation to selected message types,
- Programming of the terminal in relation to selected coastal areas (if relevant),
- Programming of the terminal in relation to selected and additional NAVAREA.
