This type of alert is of the lowest priority. This is the most common type of alert used for contacting friends on another vessel, for contacting a marina, for setting up and establishing a voice communication public correspondence link-call via a CRS to a subscriber ashore using a duplex working channel, etc.
After broadcasting the Routine Alert on VHF CH 70 and receiving the acknowledgment on VHF CH 70, voice communication continues on a VHF working channel indicated in the DSC acknowledgement from the individual vessel or CRS.

After the reception of a Routine Alert on VHF CH 70 an acknowledgement on VHF CH 70 is able to be sent back. After sending an acknowledgement, the radio will automatically re-tune to the working channel. Then a voice message on working channel should be listened to and voice communication on the working channel should continue.

Practise on the VHF radio simulator
The following indicates the procedure for broadcasting a Routine Alert on VHF CH 70 using the VHF DSC controller:- Select the working channel in Radio mode
- Switch to DSC mode
- Press the Call softkey
- Set the station you wish to call either
- From the directory - press the Dir softkey to scroll through directory entries, or
- From an manually entered MMSI - use the keypad to type in MMSI and press the E key
- If you are not calling CRS (MMSI begins with "00") then you can change the channel to be used in voice communication (by default it is the same as the working channel) either
- From pre-programmed VHF CH 06, 08, 72 and 77 - press the Chan softkey to scroll through them and press the E key, or
- Manually enter the channel number - use the keypad to type in the channel number and press the E key
- Press the Send softkey
- Press the E key

After the reception of a Routine Alert you can:- Accept and answer the call by sending an acknowledgement: Press the softkey Ack.
- Not accept the call: Press key C to cancel the ringing and to clear the display. Press the softkey Stop to cancel the ringing only.
