This priority is below Urgency and indicates a station broadcasting MSI (Maritime Safety Information), either an important navigational warning or a meteorological forecast/broadcast.

After broadcasting a Safety Alert on VHF CH 70, voice communication follows on VHF CH 16 or a selected working channel commencing with the procedure word Securite. Safety Alerts can be addressed to either all stations or to an individual station (though not on the Class D DSC controller).

Practise on the VHF radio simulator

The following indicates the procedure for broadcasting a Safety Alert on VHF CH 70 using the VHF DSC controller:
  1. Press the Call softkey
  2. Press the Type softkey once to scroll through different types of calls to the Safety Call
  3. You can change the default working VHF CH 16 to be used in voice communication either:
    • From pre-programmed VHF CH 06, 08, 72 and 77 - press the Chan softkey to scroll through them and press the E key, or
    • Manually enter the channel number - use the keypad to type in the channel number and press the E key
  4. Press the Send softkey
  5. Press the E key


The setting up and broadcasting of a Safety Alert on VHF CH 70

A Safety Alert is transmitted to All Ships on VHF CH 70. Follow with voice communication on the selected working channel commencing with the procedure word 'Securite'.

Reception of a Safety Alert

After the reception of a Safety Alert on VHF CH 70 the radio will automatically re-tune to the working channel and a Safety Message on the working channel must be listened to.

Practise on the VHF radio simulator

After the reception of a Safety Alert press the softkey OK to cancel the ringing and to clear the display. Press the softkey Stop to cancel ringing only.
