The power ON/OFF connects the VHF radio to its power supply, so until it is switched on the radio is useless. For some equipment there is a dedicated push button control, but for more portable equipment it is combined with the volume control.

The volume makes the level of sound from the loudspeaker or handset earphone higher or lower.

Practise on the VHF radio simulator

Switch the VHF radio ON by turning the VOLUME knob clockwise until the display illuminates. To increase the volume, turn the knob further clockwise. Turn the knob fully counterclockwise to switch OFF.

Please remember you are the part of the GMDSS system. Your radio always has to be switched on to be ready to receive distress messages. Someone might be in imminent danger and awating for your help/assistance!
